Caveats and Definitions
Numerical daytime speed limits went into effect in Montana on May 28, 1999, for the first time since the federal speed limit was lifted in December 1995. The numerical limits replaced the so-called "basic rule" as Montana's primary speed limit law. The basic rule required motorists to drive in a careful and prudent manner for conditions but did not set a maximum number of miles per hour. The 1999 Legislature enacted a proposal by Attorney General Joe Mazurek and Governor Marc Racicot to reinstate numerical limits for cars and light trucks.
